Safe enough to rest

I’ve been thinking about how sleep is one of the most vulnerable things we do. How we must become quiet and soft and unaware, taking the world as it is. We stop trying, stop looking out for things that might be wrong. We stop taking care of the people we love, or tending to the responsibilities that matter to us. We stop being our selves in a way, like a bit of death. No wonder it doesn’t always come easily.
My sleep troubles have been back the last month or so. Sleeplessness has a way of gutting the rest of my life. This time around, I am trying to accept it with compassion.
I made this piece for my bedside, to remember that while it’s true that our world is fraught with hard parts and bad news, I am also, in this moment, safe enough to rest.
