Perfectionism vignettes
The youngest part of me once learned: things must be perfect to be good, and they must be good to be safe.
For a while it protected me, and then, well, you can imagine: it kept me away from a lot of wonderful.
Perfect is one glimmering shard, a tiny life. Wonderful is everything else, and it is ours.
So it had seemed like maybe most things are bad (ideas, people, art, political efforts, etc) and it’s exceptional, rare, yet very important to be good, and if something’s not good it would be better to not do it at all. That escalated quickly.
It is a brave, hardworking, self-protective protective part and it has done a lot to keep me safe. It’s also done a LOT to keep me from making art or making friends or trying anything. So I am now nurturing another voice who can point out that most things are safe and wonderful; the real bad stuff is a small slice.
It’s not a matter of ignoring the grief and injustice. It’s a matter looking more closely.
It’s a fact: most things are good.
I held out my two favorite pieces from this month’s work, this print of of “Wonderful” and the Most Things are Good sticker for August Patreon members.
If you’d like this print, join a New Art tier before the end of August (that’s today/tomorrow depending on your timezone!). If you’d like the sticker, join any sticker tier. You can get them both with the New Art + Sticker option :)
