Bright and drizzly
I’m sitting here drinking ginger tea. It’s bright and drizzly out the window. It’s my first morning off after a stretch of days working at the hospital. It takes me a second to switch gears. Now I have just paused to switch my calendar from February to March. I am in a time lag, a bit behind the moment. Do you know that feeling? Is this just another way of saying I feel tired?
I’m thinking of feeling tired as an invitation. I open it, and wait for the invisible ink to reveal itself to see where I’m being invited. To sleep, to connection, to grief. To change my life, to find some joy, to move my body. To make something change, to close my eyes, to move on, to wait an extra 21 days before turning the calendar.
I’ve often resisted opening the invitations that come my way because I don’t want to notice how I respond. But this too is good practice. It’s ok to see how often I say no. And it’s ok to begin to say yes.
love,
Brit

“Give” 2022, prints available
Here’s the painting I made for Danielle’s birthday gift. It barely begins to capture her brilliance, complexity, groundedness. One of the many things she has given me is a strengthened ability to see - the world, ourselves, the future. So in another way, this painting holds things I’ve come to notice by seeing the world with her: the value in the first crest of sunrise, that crack of new color in early spring, and the pleasure in making things that make our home feel like our own. Happy Birthday, Danielle. I adore you!
The relief of feeling complete
“Closure” 2022
Here’s a little gaslighting poem. I was looking through my old notebooks and found this from 2019. Having forgotten about writing it, the text color illusion twisted my brain for a second, which is exactly how gaslighting feels to me.
This is the original journal page with ideas for various endings. I asked you all for your ideas for additional stanzas, and there are some really sharp ones here in the comments section if you’d like to see or add your own.
You can also see me making this piece here.
